Baby born safely during Cyclone Debbie reminds us that miracles do happen!

Baby Billiana born during Cyclone Debbie

While Queensland begins the massive effort of cleaning up after Cyclone Debbie – and braces for more dramatic weather, a baby girl reminds us that some good has come out of it all – and emergency services workers are amazing!

Little miracle

The Queensland Ambulance Service tweeted this good news story as the state battled to cope with patchy essential services, road closures, property damage, looting, school closures and stranded tourists – amongst other challenges.

“Life is precious”

Queensland Minister for Ambulance Services, Cameron Dick, said the tiny girl’s safe arrival was a reminder that we should all be looking after one another in times of crisis.

“Amid the destruction of #CycloneDebbie the birth of #baby Billiana reminds us life is precious & by looking after each other, all will be okay,” he tweeted.

Baby Billiana made her appearance at 4.20am on Wednesday morning, at the Whitsunday Ambulance Station at Cannonvale, near Airlie Beach. Road closures meant the ambulance station became a makeshift delivery room where Billiana was encouraged into the world by graduate paramedic, Pam.

“Lady in labour”

Despite treacherous conditions, the delivery went off without a hitch.

“Just after 4am we were called to a lady in labour in the Whitsunday area and our paramedics attended because we could get in there, it was safe enough for us to respond,” QAS Director of Operations Dave Hartley said.

“With all of the road closures and damage we couldn’t transport her to the hospital so we took her to the ambulance station where they delivered the baby girl just after 4am. Everything is fine, it was a nice controlled delivery they are just waiting to assess things today to see if they can get her to hospital.”

Congratulations to this family on their intrepid new arrival – and a huge congrats to the mum who stayed cool under pressure and birthed her baby safely!
