Oh-kayyyyy … Even those of us who are very fond of the Colonel’s secret herbs and spices raised an eyebrow at the baby naming competition KFC just launched.

A lifelong (chicken) leg-acy

In the spirit of Willy Wonka’s famous golden ticket comes a much less fantastical, much more fatty golden-fried payday for one un/lucky baby.

Yup, to honour what would have been KFC founder Harland Sanders’ 128th birthday, the company has announced they’d like to give one special newborn $11000 (hello 11 secret herbs and spices reference!) to put towards their education.

Wait. What? Yes, apparently all parents have to do to tap into this generous bounty is … simply name their pure and innocent baby Harland.

They should also ensure the baby is born in the first seconds/minutes of 9 September because that OG icon Colonel Sanders was born on that very date, back in 1890.

Finger lickin’ nope

The first baby born on this date gets the money and a name indicating how nuts their parents are/how customisable their c-section timing could be –  but they have to complete the entry form and provide proof of the birth date and time.

The winner will be $11k richer and be bound to a fried chicken company for the rest of their life. Oh hurrah!

The company are playing wide-eyed and coy about this stunt, noting they’re simply keen to revive the Colonel’s name and celebrate his chicken leg-acy.

“Even though vintage names are making a comeback, our iconic founder’s name was dwindling in popularity, and we couldn’t just stand idly by and let that happen,” KFC US chief marketing officer Andrea Zahumensky explained, in a press release. She then confirmed that Harland ranked 3257 in 2017’s most popular baby names.

“We hope that this birthday celebration honours the Colonel and encourages the next generation of people aspiring to live the American dream.”

Please don’t

So, the clock is ticking for bonkers pregnant ladies who want to give birth to a cashed-up, chicken endorsing infant.

Stay tuned for further Harland news – and photos of a grinning nugget loving family, clutching their poor wee baby Harland – very soon!

Or not.
