Anna Faris is a brilliant actor and broadcaster, and mother to five-year-old Jack. In a recent appearance on The Ellen Show, Anna revealed that despite being a certified Hollywood superstar, her confidence – and instincts – sometimes fail her when it matters most.

“Terrifying”

Anna spoke about preparing Jack for his entry into school, and admitted she found the interview process incredibly intimidating.

“I grew up in Washington State with public schools, so like the whole L.A. school process has been terrifying,” she told Ellen, explaining that one particular school initiation left her rattled and red-faced.

“I went to this private school where they had all the parents sit around in a circle, and I don’t know anybody. There’s a bunch of toys in the middle of the circle, and we were supposed to pick a toy out and talk about the weather. That was the only instruction, so I thought, ‘This is like a group therapy session,’ I guess.”

“I don’t want to do homework”

A bolstered Anna decided to go first, in the hopes of creating a good impression and scoring some brownie points for initiative. She pulled a teddy bear from the pile and began her piece.

“I started to go on this monologue about how nervous I was about the whole process,” Anna recalls.

“Nervous about, you know, ‘What if we get rejected? What if my kid doesn’t wear the right thing? And what if I have to do my kid’s homework? Like, what’s your homework policy? I don’t want to do homework. I don’t know how to do homework.’ … I’m realizing, as I’m saying this, I’m putting my foot in my mouth.”

“I pass the bear onto the next person, and she was like, ‘Well, it’s pretty sunny outside for me. And she passed it to the next person, who was like, ‘Well, it might rain soon.'”

Whoops

Somehow the “talk about the weather” instruction found its way into Anna’s brain where it received a bracing overthink and was spat out as a stream of anxious consciousness. Anna says she was mortified and things did not end well at all.

“I was like, ‘Oh, my god! In general, I have no idea what I’m doing, but it’s been confirmed in this moment, right now. I wanted to run out of there so fast.”

“Anyway, we got rejected,” the Anna Faris Is Unqualified host concluded.

“I could have told you that like two minutes ago,” a very patient Ellen shot back.

“A lot of love and friendship”

Anna and ex-husband Chris Pratt announced their separation last year, much to fans’ distress.

“It’s a little bit like, two incredibly busy people that care a lot for each other got really busy,” Anna told the The New York Times of their split.

They have pushed on and are committed to keeping things peaceful between them, and working to co-parent adorable Jack.

“What Chris and I try to do is to communicate openly,” she explained to Women’s Health. We reiterate that there aren’t rules to this. We have a lot of love and friendship, and our big goal is to protect Jack. I cherish my family, my close friends, my child—that makes the rest of it worth it.”
