Many families have the concept of sharing the workload down pat. Many families do not. And here’s why it’s so important that we get it right, for our own children’s sake. Whether you have sons or daughters, you really need to watch this video.
On Saturday we brought you an important message from Melinda Gates, Bill Gates’ wife, who admits she has a hard time maintaining the balance of the household and believes men and women need to share the load more often. She also touches on the idea that perhaps the reasoning behind the role of male and female comes down to our past:
“But while the world has changed a lot, some things haven’t changed much at all and caring for the kids, cooking for the family and cleaning the house is still largely considered woman’s work,” Melinda says.
“Unless things change, girls today will spend hundreds of thousands more hours than boys doing unpaid work simply because society assumes it’s their responsibility.”
And this is the same message that is outlined to perfection in the video below:
Posted on Facebook by Sheryl Sandberg, she writes, “Stereotypes hurt all of us and are passed from generation to generation. When little girls and boys play house they model their parents’ behaviour; this doesn’t just impact their childhood games, it shapes their long-term dreams.”
What do you think, Babyologists? Could your partner help out more? Are the roles at home defined by our past or is there room for growth and change?
I have to admit that for all his faults, my children’s father always tries his best to help out around the house. And I’m sure many other wives and mothers have partners that do too. So, if you are lucky enough to have a partner that shares the load, now’s the time to say thank you. And, if not, now’s the time to show him this video.
