Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel have been going through a really difficult time, and now the superstar singer has issued a very public apology to his wife and preschool-aged son on Instagram.

A rough patch

“I stay away from gossip as much as I can, but for my family I feel it is important to address recent rumours that are hurting the people I love,” the update from Justin began, addressing the swirling allegations that he was romantically involved with his Palmer co-star, actor Alisha Wainwright.

Justin and Alisha play on-screen lovers in the New Orleans-shot film, and video and photos of them off duty and holding hands were circulated last week. Much was made of the fact that Justin was not wearing his wedding ring at the time.

Follow-up images showed the pair on set, emerging from a trailer together, and before you knew it paparazzi were chasing Justin’s wife Jessica Biel for comment.

In the wake of all this — and perhaps in an effort to draw a line in the sand and maintain interest in the film — Justin’s now issued an apology to his wife, the pair’s four-year-old son Silas and his family.

“A few weeks ago I displayed a strong lapse in judgement,” he wrote in an Instagram update shared overnight.

“I drank way too much that night and regret my behaviour. I should have known better. This is not the example I want to set for my son.”

“I apologise to my amazing wife and family for putting them through such an embarrassing situation, and I am focused on being the best husband and father I can be. This was not that.”

“I am incredibly proud to be working on Palmer,” he added. “Looking forward to continuing to make this movie and excited for people to see it.”

Cry me a river?

Justin’s followers relished the chance to weigh in on this controversy, reminding him that he’d made a baby with Jess and that she deserved so much better. In fact, they’ve been trolling his Instagram comments since last week.

“That is the most narcissistic/cheating type of sorry I’ve ever read. ‘Sorry I drank too much. Anyway back to my movie.'” one wrote, echoing the views of many.

“Sounds like a ‘sorry I got caught apology’ to me, per usual,” someone else wrote.

“You alone are the one who hurt your family. Own it,” another follower wrote.

“Where was your wedding band that night?”

But others thought this was all a storm in a teacup and that there was absolutely nothing to be sorry for.

“It‘s so obvious that you just had too much to drink and that you‘re in no place of realizing what‘s going on around you,” one fan posted. “I‘m sure your wife can also see that from the footage. Your couple will survive this, I‘m sure.”
