In what might just be the ultimate feel-good story on the internet today, preschool sweethearts who declared their love aged 3 have gone on to marry 20 years later!

"Laura and I met in preschool. One of my very first memories is of being 3 years old and standing up in front of my pre-school class, declaring that I would marry her someday. As kids, Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the 'right way' to properly eat string cheese. We have fond memories of playing hide-and-go-seek, chasing after each other on the playground, and mischievously staying up during nap time. I was enamored with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day. Eventually, we lost touch upon entering our Elementary School days and for the next seven years, our family's annual Christmas cards was the only way we ever saw each other's faces. It wasn't until High School that we reconnected by happenstance through a mutual friend. Within two weeks, we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend. We continued to date through out all of High School, even though we went to different schools. We even stuck together long-distance while attending colleges in different states. We remained a resilient couple until May 23rd, 2015 when I decided to stay true to my preschool pledge and make Laura my wife. I proposed to her at the place it all began… our preschool classroom."
Love at first sight
It was pretty much love at first sight for 3-year-old Matt Grodsky when he clapped eyes on his cute and clever preschool classmate, Laura Scheel.
“She was always a girl who let me follow her around,” Grodsky told Today of their early years together. “I’d try to impress her by reciting lines from movies like The Lion King and stuff like that,” he laughed.
Even more laughter rang out when 3-year-old Matt declared he would marry Laura one day, but the lad brushed it off. “Just you wait,” a determined and besotted Matt told his preschool peers, Today reports.
Twenty years later – in December 2016 – the couple have proven just how serious they are about each other. As they paid a visit to the Arizona kindergarten where they first met, Matt got down on bended kneed to propose… and Laura said yes!
It was a full circle moment for the pair, who’d spent the intervening years in various states of connection.
Matt explained that he and Laura were inseparable during these kinder years, having playdates and going on outings together very, very often. He learned some very important skills from her, it seems.
“As kids, Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the ‘right way’ to properly eat string cheese. We have fond memories of playing hide-and-go-seek, chasing after each other on the playground, and mischievously staying up during nap time. I was enamoured with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day,” he told The Way We Met.
Sadly, the pair ended up going to different primary schools, but their families kept in touch sending each other Christmas cards each year. When they got to high school age, a mutual friend reconnected the kindergarten sweethearts and two weeks later the couple picked up where they left off and began dating.
Where there’s a will…
Typically, the path of true love didn’t run smoothly and the narrative arc dipped once more. High school graduation saw the pair separated once more, as they attended colleges 2500kms apart. Oh no!
It’s okay though, because Laura and Matt will never, ever be beaten. Steamrolling adversity admirably, they made their long-distance relationship work beautifully and as they prepared to commence their senior year, Matt popped the question on what might just be the ultimate playdate for the pair. Yesss!
He’d bought the ring a couple of months earlier and had his brother secreted away at the proposal location aka preschool, ready to snap a pic of the big moment for posterity.
“Oh my gosh!”
Laura was very much taken by surprise. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?'” she told Today. “I saw the ring and was like, “This is gorgeous. I’m so happy with it.'”
Phew! Matt managed to organise a few more delightful details, showing he’s still a super thoughtful lad all these years later.
“Grodsky’s brother brought out a picnic basket (the very same one that Grodsky’s dad used when he proposed to his mom) full of bridal magazines and sparkling cider, then bowed out to give the newly-engaged couple a private picnic to celebrate.” Today reports.
Naw. These guys were obviously meant to be together, and knew it from the get-go! How lovely!
