Sometimes it takes a serious jolt to make us really sit up and take stock of our lives. For Adrian Murray, it was his 10-month-old son’s brush with death.
Adrian and wife Michelle woke one morning to find baby Emerson unresponsive in his cot. He was rushed to hospital, where three days of tests came back inconclusive. A few days later he had another episode, and was put on to anti-seizure medication.
The terrifying experience was enough to remind Adrian of the fragility of life, and to inspire him to train his lens on his family. He started taking beautiful candid photos to capture the childhood memories of Emerson, now two, and his new little brother, seven-month-old Greyson.
They show the joy and innocence of childhood – his boys playing with toys and animals, frolicking in autumn leaves or marvelling at things they find in the great outdoors. Part of the beauty of the shots, which feature on Adrian’s website, is that they are unstaged and minimally enhanced.
And as the photos make their way around the world, the family has received some wonderful news – Emerson is healthy and has just come off his medication. “We are very fortunate that everything worked out for Emerson!” writes Adrian on his Facebook page.
