Mum and daughter’s childhoods merge in flashback photos

We’ve all looked through our parents’ childhood photos, pondering what life was like back then (though we might have heard the stories a million times!). Were we similar to our parents as children, would we have liked the same toys and activities?

Danielle Delph always wondered whether she and her mum, Janis, would have been friends if they’d grown up together. So she decided to add herself into her mum’s childhood photos.

“A popular trend right now is Throwback Thursday, where people post old photos of themselves or their parents as kids (to social media). We’re bombarded by this sort of old imagery all the time, and it made me think – what if I could merge her ‘throwback world’ with my ‘throwback world’? What would it have looked like?” the art director from Portland, Oregon, tells Babyology.

So the hunt for photos began. The family had lost most of them when their house was flattened during Hurricane Ivan in Florida. “But after going through the photos that were left, I was surprised at how easily I was able to puzzle them together from our different ages,” Danielle says.

The photos, posted to her blog, DanielleandJanis.com, show the pair playing, walking, posing and laughing as toddlers, children and teenagers.

The process took about six months, from finding the photos to scanning and Photoshopping Danielle into them. “(I was) looking for moments where our ages, activities, or facial expressions seemed natural, or that we were genuinely interacting with one another. It’s been really interesting to see how similar our behaviours were,” she says.

Danielle’s mum tells her that looking at the photos gives her a real sense of déjà vu. “She tells me it’s just so special. She looks at the site every day (now she calls it our site) and it makes her cry,” she says. “Almost every phone call ends with a ‘subtle reminder’ from her that all she wants for Christmas are the photos printed and framed, so she can hang them up and look at them whenever she wants. Pretty easy gift if you ask me.”
