Dear Mummy, this is what I see when I look at you

Dear Mummy,

You are looking at yourself in the mirror again, grabbing your belly to make it wobble, and me giggle.

You are so funny, Mummy!

But you aren’t laughing. You are squinting like you do when clipping my fingernails. Snip, snip.

I know! I will grab my belly and make it wobble, too.

Ah, now you are laughing!

But Mummy, I wish you could see what I do when you look at your reflection.

To me, you are perfect

Mummy, did you know no one could be my mummy but you? I wouldn’t want any other mummy. Nope. You are the one.

You are the marshmallow to my babyccino. We just go together.

To me, you are perfect.

You are the best mum to me. (And please silence the voice in your head, I am the one talking, not you!)

And you are perfect because you are you. There is no one who can be you. Just like there is no one who can be me. Do you get it?

I don’t see your flaws; I just see you.

I don’t see your failures; I just see my mummy.

I don’t see how much you weigh or how often you wash your hair, I just see the woman who gave me life and keeps on giving of hers to me to make me feel safe, loved and happy.

Mum and baby

You are beautiful

Mummy, when I try to snap photos on your phone and you cover your face, I don’t want you to.

I love your face!

I know your face better than anyone. I know every line and freckle (you have dots, Mum! You are so lucky), and I love them. Your face is the most beautiful of all.

It is the face that I gazed into as you fed me as a baby. Your smile was filling me up with more than just nourishing milk.

The face with the softest lips for kissing away my owies.

The face that I search for at childcare pick up and bolt towards to be enveloped again in your loving arms.

The face that I look to when I need reassurance, or just to find out if what I am about to do is a good or silly idea.

The face I stroke with a sleepy hand as I fall off to sleep and then look for as soon as I wake up because you have moved me to my bed, again. (Please stop doing that.)

Your face is more beautiful to me than a rainbow My Little Pony’s tail. And Mum, that is the most beautiful pony of all!

I don’t see what you see, ever

When I look at you, all I see is a strong, capable woman who is all giving, kind, loving, funny and pretty in her own ‘that’s my mummy’ way. (But also tired. Yep. Sorry about that.)

To me, there is no one more beautiful than my mother.

You are loved

When you look in the mirror, I hope you feel loved, like I do when you look at me.

Because you are.

So. Very. Very. Very. Very much.

I love you with all of my fast-beating heart.

So Mummy, when you look in the mirror, I want you to imagine I am the mirror. I wish you would see what I see. I wish you could love yourself like I love you.

Because Mummy, to me, you are perfect, and you are so very beautiful.

I love you,

Love me. x x x
