Dad pens perfect response to his children’s plea for a puppy

There comes a time in all parents’ lives when we have to answer the inevitable question, “Can we get a puppy?”

How you respond depends entirely on whether you are a dog person or not. But this non-dog dad figured out a way for everyone in the household to win.

There are contracts for everything these days – including dog ownership. And it’s definitely something that we would consider adapting into our homes!

Reddit User R. Johnstone recently shared a family contract that outlines the rules that must be followed if the kids are allowed to get a dog.

dog contract created by reluctant dad from mildlyinteresting

Clearly written by Dad, some of the stipulations include, “Dad never has to pick up dog poop,” “Dad never has to give the dog a bath” and “Dad has unresticted veto power for the dog’s name.”

In order for said dog to join the household, the dog must weigh less than 7 kgs, not shed or drool, be well behaved and must never, ever poop on the lawn. The dog must also be satisfied with plain dog food – “no organic, gourmet or special diet food”.

But perhaps the best stipulation – “the dog is not included by name on the family Christmas card”. And, if a picture of the dog does make it on to the card, it’s by pure accident. No doggy sized Santa hats allowed.

And, guess what, the family welcomed a new puppy two weeks after this hilarious contract was signed by Mum and the three kids –  Kershaw, who, as R. Johnstone writes, “doesn’t shed or drool”.

The dog eats plain dog food (no expensive organic stuff for Kershaw), doesn’t require harmful cleaning products and appears to poop in the designated area.

“Everyone (including Dad) adores the dog, which has been a fantastic addition to (though not a member of) our family.”
