Cock a Doodle Doo! What to expect from Chinese Year of the Rooster babies

Baby with rooster hat

Each Chinese year is characterised by one of twelve different animals, with the zodiac’s tenth sign, the Rooster, about to take its place in the spotlight.

Let the new year begin!

The Year of the Rooster begins on Saturday January 28 2017 (Chinese Lunar New Year) and lasts until February 15th, 2018. You can find out what’s happening in your neighbourhood for this weekend’s celebrations here.

If your bub is due to arrive in the coming weeks and months, you’ve got a rooster on your hands, mums and dads!

We predict your 2017 rooster tot will not only be vocal at times, they’ll wake you up in the very early morning… possibly in the evening too!

Here’s some more Rooster qualities to consider:

Fire Roosters

Babies born in the coming Chinese zodiac year are actually Fire Roosters. (You can also be a Metal Rooster, a Wood Rooster, a Fire Rooster or an Earth Rooster, depending on your birth year.)

Chinese astrologers tell us that Fire Roosters display excellent leadership and social skills, and are very particular about their image and how they look.

They can also sometimes be a little too blunt, occasionally treading on others’ toes in the diplomacy stakes. #Whoops

Personality

The Rooster is the only bird in the Chinese zodiac. Rooster personalities may embody the following traits:

  • vocal
  • loyal
  • trustworthy
  • observant
  • responsible
  • social
  • practical
  • sensitive
  • organised
  • house-proud
  • courageous
  • attention-seeking
  • boastful
  • vain
  • moody at times

Health

Roosters are said to be hardy types, quick to recover from illnesses. They are however, apparently prone to stress.

Roosters are also often likely to take on too much and get burnt out, so need to schedule plenty of down time to stay happy and healthy. (Try telling that to your night-waking baby/self!)

Playground pals

As always, some pals are better than others when it comes to friendship:

  • Best sandpit pals for Roosters are Ox, Snake, Dragon
  • Least ideal party guests are apparently Goat and Rabbit

Future career

Courageous, consistent and creative, experts say the following career paths could suit your little Rooster:

  • newsreader
  • sales person
  • restaurant owner
  • hairdresser
  • teacher
  • journalist
  • surgeon
  • soldier
  • fire fighter
  • police officer
