A teacher (and mum) has taken to Instagram with a timely reminder to parents about what matters most during this festive season. Her words are quickly going viral … for very good reason.

Keep. It. Simple.

While you ‘d be forgiven for thinking that ticking off the most important items on your child’s Christmas list is the sure-fire way to their heart, this experienced educator says nothing could be further from the truth.

Don’t panic, though, because the key to festive success – and long-lasting memories – is within easy reach and doesn’t involve trudging down to the shopping mall or maxing out your credit cards.

“Dear parents at Christmas,” Instagrammer AndGreenAndBlue posted. “I know at this time of year there is pressure to create a perfect magical Christmas. I know that you want to give them the magic of Santa and ensure he brings the best gifts and sometimes that means a bit of stress for you, but I’m writing to tell you a secret. I’m writing to tell you that every January when your child comes back to school they tell me all about the Christmas holidays …”

The little things are the big things

This brilliant teacher went on to describe a few of the little moments that mean so much to the children she looks after, and notes that simply being together during the holiday season is a highlight that pops up over and over again.

“They tell me about the days when everyone stayed indoors and watched TV,” she wrote. “They tell me about the walk in the freezing cold to get a McDonald’s. They tell me about staying at Grandma’s and then being excited when you came back from work. They tell me about how you let them snuggle in your bed.”

‘They tell me how you played cards and took them swimming one day and forgot their towel. They tell me about a visit to a friend’s on New Year’s Eve and how they stayed up to midnight. They tell me how they loved staying in their PJ’s some days and a trip out another day.”

While there’s no doubt kids appreciate their presents, they appreciate a few other things much, much more.

“They [do] mention their gifts,” Instagrammer AndGreenAndBlue explained, “but for them Christmas is you and your love and time and routines … and feeling safe. You are their favourite thing!’

The gift of … you!

Commenters on the post were touched, relieved … and in total agreement.

“This is so lovely!” one parent wrote. “Makes me think. I remember freezing walks with my late Nan and playing Trivial Pursuit where my uncle would always cheat and funnily enough I barely remember any of the presents I had!”

“Totally agree,” another said. “I only remember the family fun times NOT the presents. Bringing back fond memories.”

“Love this, such an important and true message,” someone else confirmed.

We love this sentiment and when we cast our own minds back, it really does ring true. Here’s to together-time, snuggles and chats this Christmas (as well as the odd special prezzy!)
