There is something intrinsically pleasurable about Zen blocks and it is not just the name that will bring inner calm.
Zen blocks were designed by Mike Peck who came up with the idea after watching his niece and nephew stacking rocks. The Zen blocks are carved from walnut. I am a sucker for anything wooden with a rich grain. Wood grain tricks the eye by suggesting texture which makes objects such as the Zen blocks incredibly tactile.
The appeal of the Zen blocks is two-fold. Firstly, the unusual shapes are perfectly sized for little hands. Secondly, Zen blocks are suitable for all ages (and I really mean all ages, adults included). For older children and grown-ups, there is the challenge of building with the odd shapes, but younger kids can enjoy simply stacking and rolling them, just as the designer’s niece and nephew have done.
Zen blocks start at US$24.75 and are available through Etsy.
