You’ve never seen a museum as incredible as this – welcome to City Museum

We have some brilliant museums in Australia – they engage children, and foster a love for all manner of things. But this impressive American ‘museum’ is in a world of its own. Organic and ever-changing, it’s a masterpiece.

What once was a a 10 storey shoe company building, is now the huge City Museum in St Louis. But more than a museum, the facility is a giant playground, crated by artists who use just about anything they can get their hands on to make interactive creations.

Artist and sculptor Bob Cassilly opened the museum in 1997, and while he died a few years ago, his legacy continues through a group of 20 artists who continue to update the facility.

Here are just some of the brilliant features of the City Museum:

  • A sky-high jungle gym
  • Two aeroplanes
  • Two 10-storey slides
  • A rooftop Ferris wheel
  • Cantilevered school bus jutting from the roof
  • Caves
  • A pipe organ
  • Tunnels going from floor to flooor
  • An aquarium
  • Ball pits
  • A shoe lace factory
  • A circus arts facility

One day would be nowhere near enough to get through everything in this awesome museum. It’s been created from all manner of salvaged bits and pieces, including cranes and bridges.

And the best thing is if you visit once, you can be assured that by your next trip to America, the City Museum will have a host of new things to explore.
