What to say to your child on the first day of school

The time has come to kiss the summer holidays goodbye and send the little ones back to school. Whether this is your first year doing so or you’re an old pro by now, it can be a little hard on your emotions and even tougher on your child’s nerves. Take the time to read through this post and let’s send our babies off to school on a positive note.

No matter whether your children are feeling scared, excited or a combination of both, make sure they keep these words in mind and close to their hearts:

This week you get to start a new chapter in your life, one filled with new lessons, new friends, new challenges and new adventures. You’ll have all sorts of new feelings – you might be scared, angry or sad. You might feel happy and excited, you might be nervous and shy or even a little bit worried.

Be brave. All of these firsts can be scary. Making new friends. Meeting a new teacher. Learning new rules – these are not easy, even for mums and dads. Some days you may not get it right and that’s okay. Every day is a new day filled with new beginnings.

Be strong. Stand up for yourself and what you believe in. If some of the other children are being mean, tell someone. It’s okay to be different and it’s okay to say no when you feel in your heart that something is the wrong thing to do.

Be kind. Think about those around you and treat everyone as you would like to be treated. Most kids will feel a little shy and scared too and a smile or a hello can really make a difference.

And, finally, be yourself. You are an amazing person and I love you very much. Some days the kids may be mean on the playground or you may feel like no one wants to be your friend. Other days you may feel like you have too many friends and are unsure who to play with. This is all part of growing up.

Just remember, I will be right here when school is out, waiting to give you the biggest cuddle ever, to hear all about your first day and to do it all over again with you tomorrow.

School is a journey that we are on together, just like every other adventure we’ve shared since you were a little baby. And, while I might not be there when you are doing show and tell, when you sit down to write or when you are having lunch, I am always close by.  I am always thinking about you. And, in a few short hours, I will be right back here, by your side again.

Watching your little one wave goodbye and start the schooling journey can be hard. Your baby is officially growing up and will not be by your side, tugging at your shorts as you make lunch, asking you a million questions during the day and making you laugh from the back of the car as you run the errands.

So, to all parents who are making the trek to school this week with their little ones, take a deep breath when you embark on the school drop off. Be brave, be strong and be prepared with a pair of sunnies in your pocket and a box of tissues in the car, just in case.
