Welcome to Zand Hotel – the incredible hotel that’s a giant sandcastle!

Forget the sand between your toes – how would you like to stay in a genuine sandcastle? Just like the shifting sands, they won’t be around forever, but we can give you a peek inside these incredible structures.

In the same tradition as Australia’s own sand sculpting displays, two hotels have been built using sand in the Netherlands as part of a sand sculpting festival.

As if staying in a sand hotel isn’t unique enough, each of the structures is housed inside sculptures; one is a replica of the Flintstones’ home and the other is adorned with dragons, the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army.

Incredibly these sculptures took considerably less time to build than a traditional hotel – just four weeks. The event organisers, Global PowWow, took their inspiration from ice hotels in Sweden and Finland. They used thin walls, covered in reinforced sand to make the structures, and apparently it means they’re quite sturdy.

The Zand Hotels are really well equipped, with electricity, running water and even Wi-Fi. Things like the fittings in the bathrooms and the beds are of course made the old-fashioned way.

A stay in a Zand Hotel is actually pretty reasonable – €150 for an overnight stay for two. However, these sandy sculptures are fully booked and they will close at the end of the festival – that’s September 28 in Sneek and October 4 in Oss. However, there are plans for the hotels to reopen next year, and for expansions to other countries. Fingers crossed our sandy shores may be on the list.
