Tiny Hearts Paediatric First Aid – helping save tiny lives

When my first baby was a newborn, I was overcome by just how little I knew about what I should do should I ever needed to administer first aid to her. My First Aid Certificate had only just been renewed, but the focus was on first aid for adults, rather than babies and small children and I felt decidedly ill-equipped in that area. Thankfully now parents have options for training themselves in emergency first aid for their babies and small children.

Tiny Hearts Paediatric First Aid was established by sisters Nikki and Rachael, who with backgrounds in paramedics and education, saw a gap in the community in terms of basic, child specific first aid. There is an abundance of information on feeding, sleeping and settling babies, but information about how to save your little one’s life in the case of an emergency is harder to come by. As a paramedic, Nikki saw first hand the life saving difference that knowing basic paediatric first aid could make, and so, together with sister Rachael set out to provide a training course for parents and parents-to-be.

Tiny Hearts Paediatric First Aid courses are specifically focused on the things parents of newborns and small children need to know. They provide nationally accredited training and cover things such as infant CPR, choking, drowning, asthma, anaphylaxis, poisoning, SIDS and safe sleeping, over-the-counter medications, temperatures, seizures and burns. For me, knowing what to do with a baby who was choking, for example, made the whole experience of starting solids a lot less stressful.

As a Melbourne-based company, Tiny Hearts has been able to train 2000 people in paediatric first aid, giving them valuable, life-saving skills. They have also earned themselves a credible celebrity following, with models Megan Gale (pictured above, centre) and Erin McNaught, writer Zoe Blake and her comedian husband Hamish (pictured below), and actor Kate Ritchie and former rugby playing husband Stuart Webb among those to complete first aid training with Tiny Hearts.

The exciting news is that Tiny Hearts are launching in Sydney on 23 November, 2014 with training courses in Bondi Junction, and from January 2015 they will be able to offer Australia-wide training! They will, of course, continue to offer their monthly Melbourne pediatric first aid courses in South Yarra. At $85 plus booking fee for Sydney ($75 for Melbourne) for a three-and-a-half-hour course, Tiny Hearts Paediatric First Aid courses may well be the best money that you ever spend.

If you are unable to make one of their public courses, Tiny Hearts offer private courses as well, where they come to you. These cost $750 for up to ten people, with additional people costing $75 a head, and are a great idea for a mother’s group or group of friends and family who may not be able to make it to the public courses.

Tiny Hearts also sell paediatric first aid kids. They contain everything you would need for kids, including a thermometer, Bandaids and antiseptic gel, as well as assorted bandages and dressings and a child specific CPR mask. The Red Paedriatic First Aid kit costs $235 and makes an excellent purchase for your own household or as a baby shower gift.
