If you’ve been a baby, known a baby or had a baby some time in the past twenty years, odds are you know the words to at least one Wiggles song. So when Babyology were invited to farewell the skivvied ones on their round-Australia goodbye tour, of course we said yes.
Our production coordinator Anjee won the in-office arm wrestle for the tickets and took her three-year-old daughter to the show. She tells us her daughter was terribly excited for days leading up to the show, as it was to be her first big concert. Not much can make a preschooler go quiet, but Anjee says taking in the sounds and sight of a Wiggles show at the capacity-packed arena at Sydney Olympic Park certainly did the trick.
The Wiggles – in their original line-up of Anthony, Murray, Jeff and Greg – had the entire crowd singing, dancing and hot potato-ing along. Santa made a guest appearance, and the “new” Wiggles (three new faces plus Anthony) were duly introduced before delivering an energetic taste of what we can all expect from the new chapter of this global super-group next year. Anjee says she felt a part of Australian music history being at the farewell show, and will talk about it with her awestruck daughter for years to come.
I treated my own big red car-loving son to tickets to the farewell concert here in Melbourne – which rather oddly seemed to be full of screaming teenagers – and he was lucky enough to meet Murray Wiggle as he strode through the aisles in his trademark red skivvy gathering tributes from the crowd! Here he is with his cousin as both boys hand Murray a rose for Dorothy the dinosaur. Goodbye Wiggles, it’s been fun!
You can still catch The Wiggles at their final farewell concerts at the Sydney Entertainment Centre this weekend (December 22 and 23). Then check out more fun kids activities at Sydney Olympic Park during the summer school holidays.
