Snap up a copy of this book now – it will undoubtedly become a classic.
The High Street by Alice Melvin is about a little girl, Sally, who has a shopping list of ten odd items to buy including “…a yellow rose, a garden hose, a bunch of grapes, some roller skates…”. Sally has to visit all sorts of shops on the High Street and while she is shopping, we see lots of wonderful things.
There is so much to love about this book – the throw-out pages that you ‘open’ as Sally enters the various shops, the sweet rhyming text and of course Melvin’s stunning, sumptuously detailed illustrations. Look out for quaint touches – the teapot weathervane at Mr Kumar’s china shop, the fancy wall-mounted kazoos at Mrs Millard’s music shop and the exotic animals at Mrs Jomo’s pet shop. There’s so much to look at in each store that children will pore over this book again and again.
Sally’s shopping trip doesn’t end as you might expect which, in my opinion, only makes this story even better. It begs to be read aloud and is suitable for children aged three years and over. My tip? Buy it in hardcover – it will get a lot of wear!
The High Street is available from Book Depository for $16.68 with free delivery to Australia.
