The stuff that fairytales are made of

Jabberwock, Cheshire Cat, tea parties, croquet with flamingos and hedgehogs, rabbit holes, the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee…. if these things make sense then you’ve probably been to Wonderland or through the looking glass.

Alice is my favourite storybook character and although we most commonly see her portrayed in a blue dress and  white pinny, when I spotted the exquisite Wonderland dress at Mahar Drygoods, it was without doubt  Alice through and through. The dress captures all the qualities we know and love about Alice – it’s whimsical yet bold, playful and bright. Most importantly, it is oh-so-pretty and perfect for a mad tea party.

The dress is designed by Denise Love, who wanted to create clothing fanciful enough to be considered a ‘dress-up’ by kids, but practical and beautiful enough to be worn everyday. I love seeing kids out and about in their favourite costume but I hate that those same costumes are usually made of tacky polyester. Love’s dress-ups are just the answer and her attention to detail will thrill fashion loving parents. The delicate collar, flashes of contrasting fabric hidden in the pleats of the Wonderland dress and bright patterns are beautiful.

Love has also created a divine Little Red Riding Hood poncho. I’ve gone a little crazy on capes this winter for my daughter, to the point where I’m thinking, “How many capes is too many?” I suspect I’m still one short, as the Red Riding Hood poncho needs to visit my grandma.

The Wonderland dress is US$50 and the Red Riding Hood poncho is US$84. Both are made to order and are available from Mahar Drygoods who ship internationally.
