Smoke detectors – they’re necessary, but so very ugly, right? Not when it comes to these designer detectors.

The Chick-a-Dee smoke detector is a deflection from your stock-standard smoke alarm. Perched atop a dainty branch, these colourful creations are perfect for nurseries and children’s rooms. It’s a decorative designer piece with a serious purpose.

The Chick-a-Dee took flight as the result of a design competition sponsored by the Dutch Association of Insurers. The clever contest was part of a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness of fire hazards in and around the home – and the Chick-a-Dee, designed by Louise van der Veld, was the winning entry.

So here’s the practical information: it’s a battery equipped, photoelectrical (optical) smoke alarm. It detects visible particles of combustions and is particularly good at detecting smoldering fire and dense smoke.

And here’s the pretty information: it comes in five colours; blue, green, pink, white and the truly designer black and white.  It’s based on the American Black-capped Chickadee, in both name and appearance.

The Chick-a-Dee, already sold in some European countries, is set to undergo testing with CSIRO Australia to ensure compliance with Australian standards for smoke alarms, so we’ll let you know once it becomes available.
