I have two independent bookshops near my house and I frequent both of them – in fact, going to the bookshop for a browse is always much anticipated by my children. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have the Poplar Children’s Book Store as my ‘local’ (that’s not to say your pint-sized book nook is inadequate, Readings Hawthorn!).
Located in Beijing, the Poplar Children’s Book Store is the first specialised bookshop for children in China, stocking a combination of children’s literature from Western and Eastern cultures. Books are just part of the Poplar story – the shop is stunning and surely would rate as one of the world’s most impressive retail spaces. From the rainbow-hued entrance and window displays which give the shop an almost surreal Willy-Wonka sense of colour and scale to the multiple reading nooks, tucked away in the most unlikely places, the Poplar store is every inch incredible.
We featured a snapshot of the store last year when we looked at amazing spaces designed for children but didn’t have any details of where it was located – enjoy the pictures and let us know if you are lucky enough to pay a visit.
