I love buying clothes for my kids. I love it so much that last week my husband tried to make me promise not to buy anything else for them this summer. Crazy, I know. Especially since I’d just stumbled across homegrown label Monstar Kids.
Designer Fiona Roy has created some of most gorgeously retro clothes I’ve seen since — well, since I was a kid. Take a look and you’ll see why I just couldn’t help myself. First on my must-have-it-or-die list were the adorable Zig Zag pants. Made from the lightest weight denim, the pants, with their cutesy zigzag stitching and denim ties, are perfect for warmer days or nights when you want to keep little legs covered without creating any heat.
I also went ga-ga over the Zig Zag skirts. I was lucky enough to grab a limited edition apple-green skirt with polkadot pockets, but Fiona’s other fabric choices are just as adorable. As are her cute-as-a-button gathered shorts in pink or green. And they all match beautifully with Monstar’s mouth-wateringly retro and folksy-inspired tees and singlets. I’m saving a few of those, as well as the stunning Peacock Dress, for my next shopping spree.
It’s not just the designs that impress. Close inspection (believe me, I looked!) shows the stitching and finish on each garment is impeccable. Which is just as you’d expect for clothes made with care right here in Australia. You’re also going to love the prices, which start at a modest $29 for a tee up to $52 for a dress.
I grabbed my Monstar Kids clobber from the lovely Tanya and Melissa at the equally lovely Kids Cargo in my inner Melbourne suburb of Brunswick. The sisters have an online store coming soon but until it’s up and running, you’ll have to visit their bricks and mortar shop in Sydney Rd. While you’re there, browse some of my other favourite Aussie labels including Little Horn, Willow & Finn, Little Leona, Minihaha, Munster and Ouch. And don’t forget to tell them Babyology sent you.
