The most amazing pregnancy journal

The lasting record of my pregnancies? Scribbled dates in the margins of Up the Duff, a trail of Mint Slice wrappers and a photo of my belly, always at its most enormous, as I was leaving for the hospital. Which is why I admire Johanna McShan’s incredible pregnancy book.

Wanting to document her pregnancy in a way that went beyond simply mapping her growing belly, photographer McShan decided to put together a photo journal of everything that came with pregnancy – from cravings and weight gain to choosing names and decorating the nursery.

The result is stunning. Her week by week narrative captures it all – I love how they thought they were having a boy only to find out later that they were expecting a girl – McShan’s accompanying pictures of ABC blocks spelling out ‘boy’ and then two weeks later, the word ‘girl’ floating in alphabet soup is fantastic.

Inspired? Check out McShan’s whole book and also the photo collection by Ryan Marshall. Marshall documented his wife’s pregnancy with a short stop-photography video clip which was McShan’s original inspiration.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
