The Godee – a uniquely useful baby blanket

What do you think this is? A baby blanket? A changing pad? Playmat? Nursing aid? Can you believe it’s all of the above, and more. There is so much more to this blanket than meets the eye.

Taking the inspiration for its name from the Hindi word ‘godhi’, meaning ‘in your lap’ the MeLuvKush Godee is designed in New York by a family with Indian roots to create a soothing environment for babies, from newborns through to six months old.

Its applications include being used as a special blanket when friends and family want to hold the newborn, making it especially easy for siblings to hold the baby and helping to prevent the spread of germs. It also creates a warm, safe environment, similar to the womb, to help soothe babies.

But wait, as they say, there’s more. It’s also great as a discrete breastfeeding blanket and even a change pad. The Godee, which draws on the clever tradition in India of special thick blankets to help carry newborns, is made from cotton and screen-printed using a really interesting wet-on-wet technique using eco-friendly dyes. It’s all done by four Indian women, who hand-craft each Godee in their homes outside of Delhi.

The designs are as vibrant and rich as India itself, with inspiration drawn from exotic wildlife. The Godee is available from MeLuvKush for US$65, shipping to Australia can be arranged by contacting MeLuvKush at
