The baby’s coming… Oh, Hello Kitty

Going natural? Need the gas? How about an epidural? No, hold it! Hello Kitty’s friendly feline face is all I need to get through labour.

I did feel slightly mad writing about the $600 Hello Kitty jewelled water recently but quite frankly, a bottle of fancy water is nothing compared to Taiwan’s Hello Kitty maternity hospital.

The thirty-bed Hau Sheng Hospital in Taiwan has been officially authorised by Hello Kitty. Images of one of the world’s most popular cats are on everything from nursing staff uniforms and birth certificates to bed linen and room decor. Visits from people dressed in Hello Kitty costumes are all part of the experience, as are the Hello Kitty statues in doctor’s uniforms.

The idea is the Japanese cartoon icon will ease the pain and fear associated with childbirth. “I wish that everyone who comes here, mothers who suffer while giving birth and children who suffer from an illness, can get medical care while seeing these kitties and that we can bring a smile to their faces, helping forget about discomfort and recover faster,” says Tsai Tsung-chi, the director of the hospital.

Yes, excellent… but I’ll take the gas, thanks.
