Take one all beef patty….

It’s mad, it’s bizarre and it’s kitsch at its very best! It’s a hamburger bed, of course. When I first saw Heather Leah Kennedy’s creation, my immediate thought was “Only in America!”

I remember as a child a family friend had a hamburger phone which I thought was the height of cool – clearly the hamburger bed would have thrilled the socks off me!

Kennedy is obsessed with hamburgers and even planned a US road-trip around hamburger stops. While one person’s obsession may stop at the dinner table, Kennedy’s did not. Drawing inspiration from the movie, Hamburger: The Motion Picture which featured dorm rooms with hamburger beds, Kennedy set about making her own.

After obtaining a genuine seventies round bed, Kennedy created a meat patty mattress, tomato and pickle cushions, lettuce sheets and a cheese slice doona. The finishing touch is the (warm) sesame seed bun (the sesame seeds are made out of pantyhose).

The bed sold on eBay for US$3050 and came with its own Facebook site, a web page and a copy of Hamburger: The Motion Picture.

So, lie back and rest – the bun is soft!
