10 clothing essentials for stay-at-home mums – that aren’t trackies!

A stay-at-home mum’s wardrobe usually consists of PJs, stained tops, trackies and not much else. Talk about depressing! You want practical, affordable items that also look good so you won’t cringe in shame when you run into a glam mum at daycare pick up or when someone drops in unexpectedly. Here’s our round up of 10 fashion essentials for mums.

stripey tshirt

1. Basic singlets and tees

Don’t just buy one or two, get a stack so you’re not forever washing them until they’re threadbare. And avoid white if possible (think about all the spew, poo and goo that comes your way). H&M have a great selection of tees, singlets and tops like this stripey long t-shirt for $12.99 – perfect for covering that post-baby mum tum and your unshaven armpits!

weekender pant

2. Lounge pants

Not trackies, but just as comfy! Try these navy Bird Keeper Weekender pants for $69.95 and you’ll never be embarrassed to step out of the house again!

3. Summer dress

Dresses are awesome for the time-poor mama – just fling it on and GO! No matching required. There are so many cute and affordable dresses to suit all styles out there at the moment, like this Zaful drawstring maxi for only $18.02. If you go for a long option you can hide your pale, dry and hairy legs too – bonus! Why not get a few options to have on rotation?

stretch jeans

4. Stretchy jeans

If you’re going to wear jeans you want them to be super stretchy and comfy – nothing too tight! Like these Uniqlo Ultra Stretch jeans for $59.90.

linen shirt

5. Linen shirts

For cooler days pop on a nice linen shirt – this bright pineapple coloured one from Boden is $49 and would look great paired with some jeans, and you can just roll up the sleeves when the sun comes out again. But if ironing isn’t for you, opt for another fabric that doesn’t show up wrinkles.

pilmsolls glitter

6. Slip on shoes

Thongs are great of course, but they’re not the best for chasing toddlers down the street, and who has time for a pedicure? Try these DIANNA slip on plimsolls from ASOS, they’re only $36 and the glitter will really brighten up your outfit! If glitter isn’t your thing, go for something similar in a chic navy or stripe like these ASOS canvas espadrilles for two pairs for $48! Other good options are Birkenstocks, sandshoes and smart sneakers.

mini skirt

7. Denim skirt

A basic denim skirt is a great option for lazy pram strolls in the sunshine or cafe pit stops. This re-made mini denim skirt from Cotton On is only $34.95 but if you’re worried about length go for a longer version like this one which has a split for better mobility.

8. Cardigan

You never know when a cool breeze will strike, or you need to quickly cover up a puree stain! Always have a lightweight cardigan on hand like this nice grey jersey one from H&M for $29.99. Short sleeved cardies are also another great option for summer.

9. One piece swimmers

When you’ve recently given birth, or have been hitting the Tim Tams too hard, you might be shy about showing off your stomach at the beach. A one piece costume is just what you need. There are so many stylish designs to choose from, like this black Nip Tuck Swim costume from The Iconic for $89.95. Hubba hubba!

seed hat

10. Sunhat

How can you expect the kids to keep their hats on if you’re not wearing one yourself? Lead by example and be sun smart with a nice hat. It’s a great way to hide hair that’s unwashed or in need of a colour too – plus you’ll slow the ageing process by covering up your skin! Try this nice Rope Knot Panama from Seed for $59.95.
