I’m declaring a little girl-crush on Melissa Green – her new album is everything I love in pop music.
In the nineties there were a host of slightly-indie-but-still-pop female singers and bands. Think along the lines of Juliana Hatfield, Lisa Loeb, Voice of the Beehive, Indigo Girls and my homegrown favourite, Club Hoy. I had them all on high rotation. Fast forward to today and imagine my joy when Melissa Green’s Sing Loud! CD, a kid’s version of everything I loved in the nineties, crossed my desk.
Sing Loud! is Green’s fourth album. Before becoming a full-time musician, Green was a preschool teacher in New York. Despite the fact that Sing Loud! was recorded for children, it’s not overloaded with ‘kids lyrics’ or simple rhythms.
I was won over with the opening track, Baby, I Love You – it’s a hark back to fifties doo-wop, with shades of some of the lesser known tracks off the Grease soundtrack (think Those Magic Changes and Rock’n’Roll is Here to Stay with its jaunty, infectious rhythm).
The title track, Sing Loud! conveys the message “Stand tall, be proud, have fun, and get up and dance.” Delivered with a rock edge, you can’t help up but sing along with the catchy chorus.
Green is joined by actress Brooke Shields on the third track, the country and western 4 Nickels and a Dime and again for We Got the Beat, a cover of the Go Gos pop classic. I never knew Shields was a singer but she certainly holds her own alongside Green.
The lyrics in the frenetically paced song, The Playdate, are fantastic – “…his shoes were old school and fly… Besides his fancy shoes, I thought he was a really nice guy…” It’s all brass and ‘secret high-fives’ and basically a seriously good kid’s song.
In the tradition of children’s albums, Sing Loud! closes with a lullaby, Will I Dream in Colors?. It’s beautiful – a gentle guitar melody teamed with slightly quirky lyrics –
“Will I dream of oceans?
Will I dream about the stars?
Will I drink tea with a fancy queen?
Will I get there in a time machine?
Oh, what will I dream tonight?
Will I roller skate through a winter snow?
Ride my bicycle down a big rainbow?”
I reckon Melissa Green can dream big – she’s got fab music for kids (and nineties-pop-loving-mums) nailed.
Sing Loud! is available from CD Baby for US$12.99. CD Baby ship to Australia.
