Show us your party – Ella’s Wizard of Oz birthday

rainbow layer cake

Somewhere over the rainbow… you’ll find a birthday cake that will leave you agog with wonder! Slip on your ruby slippers, cue the tornado and come with us to Ella’s most magical Wizard of Oz birthday.

Remember that stunning rainbow layer cake we showed you all the way back in January last year? Well, Jessica has impressed us no end by making it the centrepiece of her daughter Ella’s Wizard of Oz-themed birthday.

And that’s not all she’s impressed us with.  Her red, white and blue colour scheme – a homage to the outfit worn by Judy Garland’s Dorothy in the classic film version and seen here in all its splendour at the party table – really does sing.

The striped straws came from Etsy seller Hey Yo Yo, along with the zingy cupcake cases. Jessica hired white tablecloths from a party place, then dressed them with some red gingham fabric from Spotlight. And can you spot the cute little Hello Hanna cupcake stands?

We’re digging the personalised cupcake toppers. They came from US-based paper goods store Sarah & Abraham, along with the sweet customised invitations that Jessica blinged up herself with a vial of glitter to create those famous sparkling red slippers. Perfectly matched red and blue gingham bunting strung through the trees was another Etsy find, along with the eye-catching cake bunting and Ella’s Wizard of Oz-themed headband.

The party was held in a local park but that didn’t stop Jessica going all out with the decorations too – red and white polkadot lanterns from Robert Gordon, polkadot paper chains, blue spotted paper plates and cups from Sambellina and this stunning Happy Birthday banner from Rosenberry Rooms.

Here’s another fabulous idea to steal! Look carefully and you’ll see the sweets table is decorated with “confetti” made from photos of the birthday girl, ordered online at Photofetti.

So what did the little munchkins eat? How about pretzels, organic popcorn, sugar cookies dotted with red smarties (made by the birthday girl herself), lamingtons, toffee apples, fairy bread, cupcakes, lots of fresh fruit and enough lollies to give the whole population of the Emerald City a sugar high!

And how’s this for dedication? Not only did Jessica soak the labels from those little glass bottles sourced from her local supermarket, she painstakingly removed the labels from mini water bottles too and replaced them with personalised versions from The Posh Event.

Jessica did something a little different to the usual take-home party bags and it seems we’re not the only ones who loved the retro rainbow-coloured gumball machine favours. Each guest who took one home left with a giant smile on their face too. We’re betting they couldn’t have been bigger than the smile on the face of the birthday girl!
