You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are grey… I’m betting there’s not a parent in the English-speaking world who isn’t familiar with at least the first verse of this very sweet song. For new mum Ally, it soon became her go-to song whenever she needed to comfort her baby girl. If you’re thinking that makes it a very special theme for a first birthday, you’d be right.
Presenting Avery’s stunning You Are My Sunshine birthday party, with its cheery bursts of sunny yellow and orange that can’t help but put you into a party mood. We love the originality of this party and the fact that it stems from a very personal connection between mumma and bub. Ally says her husband Jarrod hit on the song as the perfect party theme when they were wracking their brains to come up with something the best summed up their little girl.
Check out the pretty party table. Each element – the ombre birthday cake, the mason jar drinks dispensers, the wooden crate, paper sacks of popcorn and takeaway treats – are so simple, but together they make something rather spectacular. Ally hired the crates, stands and jars from Melbourne-based Sweet Events for Kids.
The best part for us is the imagination that Ally employed to come up with the themed party treats. Is there anything cuter than a cake pop bumble bee? It’s quite possible that there is not. These Tim Tam flavoured cuties came from Sweetest Jubilee, as did the sun cookies (below), with those smiling faces just begging to be eaten by the hungry toddler guests.
Ally also made fruit and jelly, presenting them to perfection in these cute little cork-lidded jars that she also found at Sweet Events for Kids (here’s a party tip, they only cost 75 cents a piece to hire), and fruit wands too, with chunks of watermelon, pineapple and strawberries. Mini sacks of popcorn also proved a hit with older children and adult guests.
Now if there’s one part of a party that I love more than any other, it’s the cake. The way the birthday child’s eyes always shine when the candles are lit and the guests launch into Happy Birthday, there’s no moment quite like it. Ally made the birthday cake herself, topping it off with a glittery ‘A’ that she created using bits and pieces sourced from Spotlight. She also made the pretty paper chain that framed the sweets table, as well as that darling You Are My Sunshine backdrop.
Finally, here’s the birthday girl herself sharing a special moment on the day with her doting mum. Thanks Avery, for letting us share your special day too.
