Legally Blonde and Big Little Lies star Reese Witherspoon admits that her youngest son is a little confused, not only about his “other mother” but also about how to spell his gosh-darned name!
“His other mother”
Reese is mum to three great kids; 17-year-old Ava, 13-year-old Deacon and almost 5-year-old Tennessee James. Ava and Deacon are the result of her marriage to fellow actor Ryan Phillippe. Tennessee is her only child with husband and agent, Jim Toth.
The kids are obviously stretched pretty broadly when it comes to ages and stages, and Reese says that provides some unique opportunities – and misunderstandings!
“The kids all have funny and unique relationships with each other,” Reese told People Magazine, explaining that Tennessee and Ava have a pretty adorable dynamic.
“Ava is like another parent to Tennessee, like his other mother. I think sometimes he even gets confused. He told Ava ‘Happy Mother’s Day!’” she laughed.
Pups and bros
Her youngest is apparently completely enamoured with his big brother, trailing him as closely as possible to learn his big bro ways.
“Tennessee is just sort of like Deacon’s protégé. He follows his older brother around the house all day.”
The family also have three pups, with one of them, a German Shepherd called Nashville, matching perfectly with her youngest son’s name.

Being a mom is one of the biggest joys of my life. I have learned so much from my 3 kids… patience, kindness, humility, creativity and of course, how to tell a great knock-knock joke! 😉 To my wonderful kids, I love you more than you will ever know (You will figure that out as soon as you have your own kids. 😘) Always know how grateful I am everyday I get to be your mom!! 💖✨💖
The name game
Reese told People Magazine this match is no accident, admitting she’s keen to be surrounded by reminders of her Tennessee roots.
“You think I want to go home? You think I miss it?” she quipped. The answer. Is. Yes!
And while we’re talking names, Reese says that the baby of the family has quite the challenge when it comes to getting his own name right.
“My own Tennessee is trying to learn how to spell his name right now. We were over at the preschool, and the teachers were saying that sometimes he just quits and writes ‘Toth’ instead.”
Naw. Poor kiddo. That really is a super tough one to get your head – and learning-to-write hand – around!
