Reading: The gift that gives back when you join Kids’ Book Club!

Giving the gift of reading is easy – there’s great joy to be had in watching your child enamoured by a book. And with Kids’ Book Club, you’re not only bestowing that gift on your own child, but also on kids in disadvantaged Australian communities. Here’s how you can make a difference by giving not only your child, but a child in someone else’s home, a great start in life.

Studies show that children who are read to from an early age do better when starting school. Learning is easier because they have already mastered the basic building blocks of literacy (letter sounds and recognition, holding a book). While many parents have access to a library, read avidly themselves or have the money to buy books, sadly many other families do not. Subsequently, their children start school at a disadvantage and without the skills needed for successful learning. The situation is steadily becoming critical and these children urgently need help.

The inspirational folk at United Way Australia are urging all of us to pitch in, with their awesome Kids’ Book Club initiative. The Kids’ Book Club is a terrific way to build your child’s library and nurture their love of reading, while also supporting United Way literacy programs in disadvantaged Australian communities.

In the next five years, United Way Australia plans to reach more than 140,000 children and, in each of the communities it works in, halve the number of kids who aren’t school-ready. You bet, it’s an ambitious plan by this non-profit organisation – but it’s a determination driven by the need for change and the desire for all children to have the same chance to reach their full potential.

The Kids’ Book Club is for children from birth to eight years and the perks of subscribing are plenty. For just $25 a month, a new book is delivered to your door, ready to ignite and engage your child’s imagination. All books are selected by early learning specialists matched with their age and stage of development from the Penguin Books Australia range, which boasts popular titles such as Hairy Maclary, Where is the Green Sheep? and The Hungry Caterpillar. With every book, your child will receive a postcard from a “book buddy”, which will help them see their membership does makes a difference and develop their sense of social awareness.

Signing up for the Kids’ Book Club is super easy. All you need to do to start getting books delivered to your door (and to spread the love of learning across the nation) is head to the Kids’ Book Club subscription page and fill in your details. Parents, grandparents and friends can even grab a Kids’ Book Club one-month gift subscription – an excellent pressie for that hard-to-buy-for child on your Christmas list!
