Prince William made his first public appearance since the royal baby news was hastily revealed on Monday night – and he took the opportunity to make a few relatable comments on the incoming royal tot.

“Not much sleep going on”
The prince was speaking about the mental health of first responders at the Police Chief’s National Mental Health and Policing Conference, when the topic of royal babies naturally came up. Attendees congratulated him on the couple’s exciting news, and William admitted that he and Kate (mostly Kate, let’s face it) had navigated some challenges in the early weeks of this third pregnancy.
“Thank you. It’s very good news,” Prince William told conference attendees, saying that things were a bit exhausting and fraught at Kensington Palace currently. “There’s not much sleep going on at the moment.”
William said he and Kate were going to “start celebrating this week,” revealing “it was a bit anxious to start with,” possibly due to the Duchess’ pregnancy health challenges.
Poor Kate is again suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum, the debilitating condition she also dealt with during her first and second pregnancies. The royal mum is currently being cared for at Kensington Palace with her mother at her side, but it’s possible she may be hospitalised if her condition worsens.
A statement from royal officials confirmed that Kate, who is in the first trimester of her pregnancy, has been seriously unwell.
“As with her previous two pregnancies, the Duchess is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum. The Duchess is being cared for at Kensington Palace.”
When pregnant with Prince George, Kate spent several nights in King Edward VII’s Hospital combatting vomiting, exhaustion and dehydration. Here’s hoping she can avoid hospital this time, and continue to be cared for with her family close by.
Reactions to this baby news are trickling in from other members of the royal family. The Telegraph reports that “The Prince of Wales, grandfather-to-be, is said to be “delighted”, as are the Queen and members of the Middleton family.”
Prince Harry has just returned to royal duties after an African holiday with girlfriend Meghan Markle. He also responded enthusiastically when asked about the new nephew or niece he has on the way.
“Fantastic. Great. Very, very happy for them,” he told assembled media at a Manchester event yesterday, seemingly unperturbed at being knocked into sixth place in the line of succession by this new baby-to-be.
The name game
Meanwhile, punters are betting madly on what the royals will name this new little person, with traditional names proving top of the pops.
Alice, Arthur, Frederick, Victoria, Elizabeth, Philip, Alexander, Mary and Albert are all coming in strongly, with Matilda, Robert, Tabitha and Philippa trailing much futher behind.
