Practical ways to help asylum seekers in Australia this Easter

Easter is a time of year that we gather and spend time with our family but there are some who don’t have that option.

Each year thousands of asylum seekers arrive in Australia, often escaping unspeakable horrors and seeking a safer life. They come with little more than the clothes they are wearing, hopeful to be recognised as refugees so they can begin to rebuild their lives.

Helping families fleeing violence

We only have to look at the heartbreaking stories that emerged from Syria recently to grasp a tiny bit of the desperation families feel when they flee their homelands for a safer country to raise their children.

Asylum seekers arriving in Australia have often fled to escape the daily threats of gunfire, bombs and the impossibility of being able to keep their children safe from the violence that surrounds them, they are left with no choice but to flee. Quite often they arrive knowing very little or no English and are battling to live with severe physical and mental scars from the horrors they have escaped.

Thankfully, not-for-profit organisations such as the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre are dedicated to helping refugees in Australia by providing programs, advocating on their behalf and gathering donations to help provide them with food and clothing.

With Easter almost upon us, ASRC chief-executive-officer Kon Karapanagiotidis recently posted a practical list of ways we can all help provide asylum seekers with their most urgent needs.
