Peekaboo! I can see some Busytown favourites in an app

I’ve yet to meet a child that hasn’t thoroughly loved Richard Scarry’s classic book, Busytown. What’s the appeal? It’s all the different animals doing all sorts of everyday things in Scarry’s unique drawing style.

Night and Day Studios, developers of the superb Richard Scarry’s Busytown app have launched a new app featuring Busytown characters – Peekaboo People.

I should preface this review by saying that although the app is recommended for children aged four years and over, I think it is better suited to much younger children. The app has only a few, very simple interactive elements and requires little manipulation for little fingers.

Using Scarry’s illustrations, the app shows an elevator door opening to reveal various Busytown characters. You get a hint at who’s behind the door from the fantastic sound effects that play before the elevator opens – my favourite is the brass band mouse musicians. I also love the rather ungainly but nonetheless adorable ballet-dancing hippo. Also keep an eye out for Lowly Worm, who pops up in all sorts of places!

Peekaboo People is $1.99 and available via iTunes. I think kids as young as two years would enjoy it. For older children who seek more interactive elements in apps and love Busytown, check out the Night & Day Busytown app.
