In the continuing quest to avoid mass-marketed nylon rugs with action heroes on them, Babyology brings you a selection of floor coverings that look and feel great, from a company with practices you can feel good about too.
Peace Industry, the brainchild of Californian couple Melina and Dodd Raissnia, creates beautiful felt rugs using an age-old Iranian handmade tradition. The company has managed to revive traditional rug making techniques which were on the verge of dying out and has created a business committed to fair trade, fair pay and the environment.
The rugs are totally organic, made by hand (or rather, foot!) through a traditional Iranian process of treating lambswool with boiling water and gentle soaps and then rolling the whole thing up and stamping on it! It’s a painstaking process but the results are breathtaking.
We think they are the perfect nursery floor covering – beautifully soft, with all the beneficial properties of wool and traditional designs to lend a global feel to your little patch of the world. At the same time, felt rugs are stronger and more durable than woven rugs, which makes them a great choice for children.
Of course, expect to pay a bit more for this kind of attention to detail – the rugs come in a variety of sizes and start at about US$875 for hallway runners. The largest rugs are approximately 2.5 x 3 metres and cost around US$2200.
