How would it be to open your child’s closet and feel joy because you know that each item of clothing is well made, practical and beautiful? That’s how I imagine it would feel to open a closet full of clothes by Australian brand Pappe.
Pappe is a designer of timeless, gorgeous quality clothes for kids and babies, and it’s got a minimalist bent that’s perfectly in sync with what a lot of us are trying (and possibly failing) to achieve in our lives.
Pappe clothes are contemporary in cut and fabric, but the nod to traditional children’s wear serves the brand well in terms of versatility. If you’re looking for “boys” and “girls” sections, you won’t find them here. Not one item in the collection couldn’t be worn by either gender, and yet girls still look a little bit feminine, and boys a little bit masculine.
Pappe has stuck to rich, neutral colours – navy, red, grey marle, chambray and a warm shade of brown that could only be called “Bambi”. The focus is on high quality craftsmanship, and the best, most beautiful fabrics. Cotton trackies may be soft and comfortable, but so is cashmere and fine Japanese cotton.
Don’t be fooled by the luxurious fabrics though. As founder Karina Simpson says, “Pappe understands the need for practicality. We are, after all, making clothes for children.” In practical terms, that means the side seams of a top won’t sprout holes seconds after putting it on, pant hems won’t come down, and those carefully chosen, contrasting turquoise buttons will stay firmly sewn to cardigans.
Pappe’s designs are deceptively simple. An outfit of loose checked pants ($79.95), an organic cotton long sleeved tee ($39.95) and navy cardigan ($89.95) looks sharp and well put together, and is refreshingly lacking in unnecessary trims and logos. The baby collection is similarly simple. Baby footed rompers ($89.95) are made of white organic cotton and look plain until the baby crawls away and flashes the brightly checked bottoms of her feet.
Pappe clothes are quietly refined, and cut to accommodate the perpetual motion of a child. You can shop the collection online, and express shipping in Australia is $9.50 flat rate.
