Our top five news posts of February

newborn stage1

As we all got back into the swing of things after the summer holidays, we were met with a mixed bag of news last month – some stories that made us grin; others much more grim.

Our most-read post in February was the warning tale of a toddler who died in a home head lice treatment gone horribly wrong. The 18-month-old girl’s family had covered her scalp in mayonnaise, then put a plastic shopping bag over her head and put her to bed. Tragically, it led to an awful outcome.

Another unimaginable death hit the headlines on February 19. A 22-month-old boy died after being accidentally locked in a hot car outside a daycare centre north of Melbourne, in a tragedy that devastated his family and shocked a whole town.

Then there was the sickening story of the family who tried to teach a six-year-old boy about stranger danger – by staging a fake kidnapping, telling him he’d never see his mum again and threatening to sell him into sex slavery.

Thankfully, there was also some much-needed light relief among our top five posts. Our – and your – love affair with baby names continues, and you were keen to see our list of 100 celebrity baby names worth stealing. From Emery Hope to Marlowe, Birdie, Briar Rose, Avri Roel and yes, North West, we may start seeing a few star-studded names pop up on Australian birth registries!

Finally, anyone who’s brought home a newborn knows those first three months can be hard work – so we put together this failsafe, tongue-in-cheek guide to help parents survive the “fourth trimester”. Take note if you’re expecting or have just had a baby, or pass on to the nearest parent of a newborn as quick as you can – they’ll thank you for it.
