If I didn’t convince you the first time I reviewed a luxurious resort that Mexico was an excellent family destination, then One & Only Palmilla, Los Cabos, Mexico will seal the deal.
Located on the tip of the Baja Peninsula, One & Only Palmilla resort is stunning and the natural surrounds are pure paradise. With its own private beach, restaurants, spa, golf course and an incredible infinity pool, it’s easy to see why One & Only Pamilla ranks up there with the world’s most luxurious resorts.
Do you remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry, travelling in first class on a plane, is asked by the flight attendant if he’d like some slippers. He thinks a moment (clearly slippers aren’t necessary) and replies “slippers would be nice!”. This came to mind when I started reading about what was on offer at One & Only Palmilla. Honestly, poolside butlers who offer a refreshing body mist, oxygen shots, sunglasses cleaning, icy poles, foot massages and fresh coconut water aren’t necessary…. but the service is very nice! Likewise, complimentary snacks, iPads for guest use, picnic lunches on the beach, a pre-arrival email to check whether you like your sheets starched or not and what goodies you’d like to see in the bar fridge set the One & Only Palmilla experience apart.
With so much attention to detail, you can be assured that the facilities and activities provided for kids are also exceptional. The complimentary KidsOnly Club is available for children aged four to eleven years old (kids under four can participate in activities with a parent or guardian) and caters for all interests. Fancy something active? There’s yoga classes, beach volleyball, beach tug-of-war, golf and soccer. Alternatively, kids can chill out with a junior spa treatment or get creative with piñata-making or origami classes. There’s also Spanish lessons and cooking classes. Teens are catered for with in-room video game equipment, iPads and iPods and special golf, tennis, volleyball and soccer programmes.
One & Only Palmilla offers plenty for families to enjoy together. Notably, the day spa offers an array of ‘family sanctuary’ treatments in the spa’s individual casitas including everything from relaxing facials and aromatherapy sessions geared toward children to healthy eating contests (points for eating veggies and fruit!) and reflexology lessons, complete with special kid-size socks that show you exactly where to apply pressure on toes and feet.
Special mention must be made of the pools at the resort. Perched high on a bluff, the resort’s main pool, the Agua Pool, redefines ‘infinity-edge’ with its waters seemingly falling into the sea below. Complete with a gentle waterfall and a meandering ‘river’ leading to a dedicated children’s pool and recreation area, it gets top marks for families. For adults craving quiet time, there is an infinity-edge adults-only pool with swim-up bar.
One & Only Palmilla guests have private access to one of the region’s few beaches suitable for swimming. All the traditional beach activities are available as well as access to the resort’s luxury yacht.
Prices begin at US$395 per night (and range up to US$3000). It is worth checking the special packages available, particularly as family accommodation offers include ‘kids eat free’ – needless to say, all the rooms are beautifully appointed. Bookings can be made directly through One & Only Palmilla and head to Flight Centre for online flight bookings
