Oliver the thumb sucking bear

My sister-in-law works in the dental field and when I was pondering whether to use a dummy or not, she jumped in with “You can throw a dummy away, a thumb is for life”. That said, I gave a dummy to all my babies until they turned three, when we donated the dummies to a newborn who ‘needed’ them. Friends with newborns were briefed before the dummy-handing-over-ceremony and each went off without a hitch, without tears and without looking back.

But thumb sucking is completely different. Parents of thumb suckers seem to despair that it is a habit that will never be kicked. There are all sorts of paints and tricks with sticking plasters but like most parenting challenges, you need a multi-faceted approach to tackle the problem.

Meet Oliver, star of The Little Bear Who Sucked His Thumb by Dr Dragan Antolos. Oliver sucks his thumb. In the beginning it was comforting, but soon he decides it is time to stop. This proves more difficult than Oliver first thought. So off he goes into the woods to seek out a mystical dragon whom he is sure can help. The dragon shows Oliver how he can stop his thumb sucking with determination and a little help, .

Antolos is an experienced dentist with a special interest in the management of dental and functional problems associated with thumb sucking. He is also a talented artist and did all the illustrations in the book. Antolos aims to deliver a positive message without pressure so that children stopped thumb sucking on their own terms. Also available is a wallchart and stickers to encourage those kids ready to give up the thumb.

Find Oliver at Fishpond or with wall chart and stickers at Thumb Sucking Help.
