Popular baby name site, Nameberry, has released their top names for 2017 and there’s an unexpected new moniker on the block for boys!
“Stunning upset” for the boys’ top name
To everyone’s surprise, the ancient name Atticus is now the most popular boy’s name on the site, with other more traditional favourites being knocked from the top spot. It has been dubbed a ‘stunning upset’ by Nameberry in their big reveal of the most popular names for 2017.
Top girls’ name makes a repeat appearance
For a second year in a row, Olivia is again the most viewed baby name for little girls. Surprisingly, four names starting with the letter A also appeared in the top 10 for girls.
Style over tradition for boys and girls
Parents have always trended towards choosing girls’ names for their style factor while the choices for boys have been more traditional and passed down through generations. But with Atticus taking the top spot, it appears times are changing.
“That’s evidence of a sea change in how parents choose names for their sons, moving away from family names and traditional male choices and judging boys’ names the same way they do girls’, with style the driving factor,” reports Nameberry.
The popular baby names website dug into their data to finalise this year’s top baby name list, by reporting on the page views each name page received from its users. The results of which are a good indicator of which names will continue to grow in popularity into 2018.
Without further ado, here are the names you can expect to hear in your bub’s preschool class in a few years time.
