Muny clothes for kids mixes traditional textiles and contemporary designs

The growing movement of handcrafted clothing for children is a marvellous thing. It supports artisans whose traditional skills are becoming rare, and it brings unique, long-lasting pieces to a market saturated with trendy clothes with built-in obsolescence.

Kids are hard on their things, so a $5 t-shirt only seems a good idea until the hem falls down the first time your child barrels down the slide at the park. Good quality clothes, like the ones from Brooklyn brand Muny, will be around long enough for two or three kids to grow out of them.

Muny two girls

Muny is a collection of kids’ and womens’ clothing and accessories that combines traditional Indian textiles with contemporary graphics and colours. Designed in Brooklyn, all the garments are made of fabrics that are block printed, handloom woven and hand-dyed. Since she was a girl, the founder Samara was always drawn to India’s textile tradition, and she grew up to create Muny – MU for Mumbai, NY for New York – as a marriage between those parallel worlds.

The Spring 2015 collection has a classic colour palette of neutral grey and white punctuated by saturated sky blue and muted raspberry. The garments are loose-fitting and made of lovely cool cotton, perfect for sweaty summer weather when the heat sends everyone chasing after the Mr Whippy truck for ice creams.

Muny’s clothes are made to last, not just because of the quality of the workmanship, but also by design. Dresses like the Jenna dress (US$68) can be worn as tunics in later years, so favourites need not be handed down after just one season.

Muny makes clothes for kids from six months to seven years old, and they’ve got an online store. Flat rate shipping to Australia is US$18.50.
