Mum pays it forward with Instagram journey of triplets born at 24 weeks

When Kayla Richardson gave birth to three baby girls at just over 24 weeks gestation, it was hard to know what lay ahead. Three months on, she’s shared plenty of updates on her girls, and a heartfelt thank you to NICU staff.

Three times a lady

Olivia, Shiloh and Sanaa were born on September 10, weighing just over one pound each.

The tiny girls were just 24 weeks and six days old, beginning a three month long stint in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Repeated hyperemesis gravidarum made Kayla’s pregnancy high risk, with doctors advising a C-section of 34 weeks. The mum-to-be didn’t make it that far. Her waters broke at her baby shower at 22 weeks, and she hung on to deliver her triplets 2 weeks later – at just 24 weeks gestation.

Reality check

Kayla turned to Instagram during those stressful early days. Not only did it provide opportunities to track her daughters’ progress, there was a whole network of premmie parents out there, waiting to connect, educate and support one another.

“Being in the hospital, I was very bored, lonely, and afraid. Some of it was scary and hard to look at, but it showed the reality of what my daughters and I could be faced with,” Richardson told The Huffington Post.

“I remember faithfully going to this woman’s Instagram every day to see if she posted anything new about her twins because they were born at 24 weeks and seeing their progress made me feel like my girls had a chance at surviving and thriving as well,” she added.

Got to hold all of my babies at the same time tonight. It was so much fun. The nurses were having a ball helping & positioning them in different ways & were taking a lot of pictures. Olivia (far right) was undoubtedly knocked OUT. Completely undisturbed & unbothered by being reunited with her sisters 😂 Shiloh is on the left & Sanaa is in the middle. I'm so thankful their nurse Holly offered to let me hold all of them tonight, it was such an amazing feeling. Holding all of them at the same time made the reality of me now having three babies sink in even further 😂 I know it's going to be stressful at times but I've grown to see these girls as the blessing that they are & I know I'll be thanking God countless times throughout my life for blessing me with these three beautiful, healthy, & outstanding girls. 💚 #triplets #tripletsmother #identicaltwins #identicaltriplets #trippinwith3 #preemie #preemiebaby #preemiebabies #micropreemie #multiples #identicaltriplets #tripletmom #tripletsofinstagram #huffpostgram #uniteinmotherhood #munamommy #frobabies #blackmomsblog #wombmates #growingupgerber #marchofdimes #blessedtrinity #blessedtrinitytriplets #huffpostgram #bourgiebabies #worldprematurityday #tripletslove

Triplet time!

Kayla naturally turned to Instagram to share her thoughts on holding all three of her babies at once, for the very first time.

“Got to hold all of my babies at the same time tonight. It was so much fun. The nurses were having a ball helping and positioning them in different ways and were taking a lot of pictures,” the new mum posted.

After months in the NICU working with staff to grow her babies, Kayla was grateful for the support she’d been given. It felt like it had all been leading up to this big moment – with many more big moments to come.

“I’m so thankful their nurse Holly offered to let me hold all of them tonight, it was such an amazing feeling. Holding all of them at the same time made the reality of me now having three babies sink in even further.”

My first time touching Olivia. The girls were 2 days old & fighting for their lives. I was crying because of how much joy I felt to be able to finally connect with my daughter after waiting to meet her for such a long time. Due to her being so fragile, I was only allowed to gently stroke her foot; but it was still so amazing! My sweet girl. This is the baby who was trying to ease her way out at only 25 weeks gestational age! I guess she was tired of Sanaa & Shiloh weighing down on her 😉😂 #NICU #nicubabies #nicubaby #25weeker #triplets #tripletsmother #identicaltwins #identicaltriplets #trippinwith3 #preemie #preemiebaby #preemiebabies #micropreemie #multiples #identicaltriplets #tripletmom #tripletsofinstagram #Nicustrong #huffpostgram #uniteinmotherhood #munamommy #frobabies #blackmomsblog #wombmates #growingupgerber #marchofdimes #nicustrong #huffpostgram #tripletslove

Ready or not!

A rough start has prepared the new mum for whatever the future may bring and she seems ready to face any challenge head on.

“I know it’s going to be stressful at times but I’ve grown to see these girls as the blessing that they are & I know I’ll be thanking God countless times throughout my life for blessing me with these three beautiful, healthy, and outstanding girls.”

Holding Olivia & Sanaa at the same time for the first time tonight 😁 They got baths beforehand & then were placed on my chest one by one for #skintoskin aka #kangaroocare. My mom is holding Shiloh, next weekend they're going to try letting me hold all of them at once 😁😁😁 Yee! Olivia was knocked out but Sanaa looked so intrigued . She stared at Olivia for a longgg time, it was so cute! I wish Olivia would wake up so she can interact with her sister, but that bath she got wore her out lol. #triplets #tripletsmother #identicaltwins #identicaltriplets #trippinwith3 #preemie #preemiebaby #preemiebabies #micropreemie #multiples #identicaltriplets #tripletmom #tripletsofinstagram #huffpostgram #uniteinmotherhood #munamommy #frobabies #blackmomsblog #wombmates #growingupgerber #marchofdimes #blessedtrinity #blessedtrinitytriplets #huffpostgram #tripletslove

Tiny transformation

The babies are transforming daily before this new mum’s eyes. They’re now feeding from bottles and are well enough to wear tiny baby clothes, too.

Kayla pumps milk for them and reads them stories as they snuggle in their isolette beds. And of course shares their story on Instagram as they continue to thrive and grow!

When asked what she hopes followers take away from her babies’ Instagram account, the proud mum said:

“I hope they feel an overwhelming sense of love, happiness, and inspiration.”
