When Carly Ryan was murdered by an online predator, her mother Sonya vowed to fight back and protect other children from the same fate. Now, a foundation set up in Carly’s memory has released an app that will help keep kids safe and parents free from worry.
Words cannot express the devastating impact of losing a child to a violent crime. When it happened to Sonya Ryan she decided the best response was to dedicate her life to making others safe. She developed this app with her daughter Carly in mind, wanting to make it something that kids will actually use. All of us here at Babyology want to honour the courage of this strong Aussie mum and help her spread the word of this wonderful free app that can save lives.
The Thread app is a collaboration between the Carly Ryan Foundation and the South Australian government and has been endorsed by the Australian Federal Police. There are no gimmicks here, this is an app designed to be intuitive, simple, and above all useful in keeping children safe and parents free from worry.
It has two main functions: first as an unobtrusive communication device between you and the kids, and secondly, as a discreet emergency contact device that can alert people when a child is in trouble.
With Thread you can set pre-determined check-in times and locations with your child, such as a friend’s house after school. If your child does not check in when prompted then the app can send you an alert with your child’s GPS location. The app also has a secure chat function that allows the child to communicate with nominated contacts.
The alarm function can be accessed without logging into the smartphone. If a child finds themselves in a situation where they feel unsafe, they just access the personal safety alarm to call ooo and to alert their nominated contacts of their location. It will also dial emergency services in just a few taps from a locked phone.
