Marvellous Mathilda’s Market in Melbourne

Last week I enjoyed a lovely Sunday morning at Mathilda’s Market, scouting the very best of the bunch for Babyology readers. There were lots of lovely things on offer from a huge range of talented designers, but alas, I could only carry so many shopping bags. Here’s what grabbed me –

Enjoy the last days of warm weather in super chic and super cute kaftans from Little Bubble and Tree. Made from soft, light cotton, the kaftans are authentic to the last, delicate detail and the designs are suitable for boys or girls. Little Bubble and Tree also have a great range of tunics (pictured above). The loose fitting style is comfortable and practical and can be worn alone or layered with a tee as the weather cools. Accessorize your kaftan or tunic with a little treasure – gorgeous necklaces (or they can be worn as a belt) made of felt, beads and buttons that are sure to thrill kids. Kaftans begin at $29.95, tunics at $42.95 and little treasures at $25.00.

Design team Daina Tender and Lisa Vuillermin have created a collection of coats, capes and raincoats that are truly exceptional. Perhaps it was Melbourne’s recent rain or maybe it is because the Tender Vuillermin raincoats are so bright, different and eye-catching, but whatever the reason, Mathilda market shoppers were snapping up these treasures, made of printed Mexican oilcloth. However, it was the Tender Vuillermin ‘Pippi’ capes that I fell in love with. Made of soft , textured candlewick chenille on one side and beautiful vintage inspired prints on the other, these reversible gems are super stylish but playful – perfect for cool autumn mornings. As capes are not fitted garments, you could buy one knowing that it will see a couple of winters. The raincoats are $60 and the capes are $110. Both are available in a range of patterns, colours and linings so contact Tender Vuillermin for more information or to buy (ph. 0400 174 741).

There is certainly no shortage of printed t-shirts on the market for kids and it can be difficult to find something different, however Little Red Duck have a fantastic range of hand-printed designs that stand out from the crowd. From telephones and tadpoles to bluebirds and owls, the huge range of designs won’t fail to please little customers. My favourite is the cuckoo clock (above) but I have been known to have a thing for cuckoo clocks! Little Red Duck designs are printed on high quality cotton t-shirts, are available in long and short sleeves, lots of colours and in sizes 6 months to size 8.

My pick of the market for babies and infants is without doubt the colourful collection, imported from Denmark by Jongen Designs. There is a huge range of patterns, colours and pieces in the collection making for endless mix and match combinations. It is the simple, fun drawings of animals that caught my eye – monkeys, hippos, sharks, lambs – you name it, they’re all there. I really like the fact that the designs are unisex and a little quirky, without being over-the-top. The range includes everything from swimwear to fleece tops, but to get your bub started, bodysuits are priced from $26.95. Go to Jongen Designs for stockists.

To date, it has been impossible to buy properly fitted pants for my 6-year-old son. He is an average size 7 in length and a size 4 in the waist. The result is that he walks around in pants that either show off his socks or pants that are so big in the waist that the back pockets are somewhere near his knees. So when I spied Daddy Long Legs, pants made for tall, lean boys, I almost kissed the ground that designer Karen Garton walks on. The pants are fabulous – beautifully tailored with fashionable details such as loops on the pockets of the carpenter pants. There is a good choice of colours including the autumn staple, tan, as well as chocolate and charcoal to take you into winter…..but the very best part is that they fit! I sincerely hope that Karen turns her hand to denim in the future and then all my son’s wardrobe issues will be solved! Carpenter pants are $49.95 and tracksuit pants are $39.95.

I also had a chance to say hello to some Babyology favourites – Knuffle Kid, Thula Thula and Cuddlefish – all had new autumn and winter designs on offer. All in all, a most enjoyable morning!

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
