Male commuters avoid giving up seats as mum stands and breastfeeds toddler

A UK mum has shamed male commuters on a London train, after they manspreaded about the carriage, casually taking up all the seats around her while she fed her hungry baby standing up.

Charming behaviour

Essex mum Bryony Esther took to Facebook to alert others to her experience, hoping to raise awareness of the struggles of using public transport with kids – and expose the thoughtless attitudes of the gents she’d travelled alongside.

“Having to stand on a train while breastfeeding my baby thanks to the lovely bunch of charmers giving more priority to their suitcases and rolling joints. It stinks,” Bryony posted, now safely and comfortably home with her family, far from unthinking travellers.

Adding insult to injury, one entitled commuter provided an extra annoying obstacle for the hands-full mum. Not only was she trying to feed a chunky toddler standing on a moving train, she was being bumped into by entitled man’s rogue bicycle. Meanwhile, he sprawled out across seats he was not even meant to be occupying, apparently unaware of her struggle.

“The cyclist with a fancy bike that keeps rolling into me, sat in the disabled seat!” Bryony posted, quite rightly, irritated and outraged in equal parts. Perhaps the lycra had cut the blood supply to his brain? It’s hard to know…

Share and shame

A frustrated Bryony initially urged her followers to share the (now private/deleted) post widely. She was hoping to expose their bad behaviour and spark discussion on common courtesy – and breastfeeding advocacy – when we’re out and about.

“Please share cos I’d love it if their mothers, girlfriends and wives get to see how they behave,” the frazzled mum posted. Share it people did!

Bryony’s post has gone viral with those responding predictably and taking sides.

One side is feeling for the mum, whose just trying to look after her kiddo in the face of these clueless “charmers”.

The other side are hoping to weigh in on Bryony’s right to breastfeed, her child’s age and even her entitlement to a seat on the busy train. Ugh.

Chased offline

Viral feedback became so passionate, in fact, it crossed over into abusive. Mouth-breathers were apparently privately messaging their outrage to Bryony’s Facebook inbox, angry at her decision to breastfeed on the train.

We assume that’s why the post has now disappeared completely and once again lament the outpouring of ignorance – and abuse – when it comes to breastfeeding in public.

Not only that – where is the kindness, understanding and support for parents who are out and about – and needing a hand – with their kids?!

Have you ever struggled with your child whilst on public transport or while travelling, in the face of clueless bystanders? Have you helped another parent in a situation like this?
