Makin’ whoopie… pies

Everywhere I turn, people seem to making ‘whoopie’. Whoopie pies, that is.

Cupcakes are so last year and cake pops, last month. Right now, it’s all about the whoopie pie.

There are dozens of variations on flavours and fillings however the classic whoopie pie recipe is two smallish rounds of chocolate cake sandwiched together with vanilla cream or buttercream icing. It’s like the less sophisticated cousin of the macaroon and the relaxed chum of the cupcake.

Whoopie pies originated in the US – it’s unclear whether bakers in Maine or bakers in Pennsylvania’s Amish country can claim them as their own but either way these delicious morsels are the latest, most desirable cake treat.

If you want to become an early adopter and wow guests at your next birthday party, check out this recipe for whoopie pies at Cookbook Maniac. If you’re already a fan, expand your repertoire with one of the numerous cookbooks available – I like Whoopie Pies by Sarah Billingsley and Amy Treadwell. It’s available from Book Depository for $17.61, with free delivery to Australia.

Check out the clip below for the truly original ‘whoopee’.

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
