For new parents, babywearing can be the stuff of miracles. You can get the vacuuming done, cook an elaborate meal or stand at the kitchen counter pounding cups of coffee, all with your baby snuggled close to your body. The thing to get you to this hands-free paradise? Wildbird’s gorgeous baby sling.
Wildbird makes divine linen baby slings ($83) in a restful palette of shades: mushroom, washed-out blue, dove grey and cream. The fabric slings are 180cm long and held secure by double aluminium rings that make the sling adjustable for different carrying styles, or as your baby grows.
Newborns are secure in a rock-a-bye-style position, or upright with their head on your chest. Older babies or clingy toddlers will happily sit supported by the sling on your hip or in a front or back carry position. The slings are suitable for kids up to 16kg, but our collective backs are crying out for any of you still regularly carrying your 16kg child.
While its slings are beautiful, Wildbird’s objective is to create a carrier that’s safe first and pretty second. Woven from flax, linen is the strongest natural fibre in the world, it’s durable and doesn’t lose its shape. On top of that it’s hypoallergenic and keeps your baby in a temperate little ecosystem, never too hot or too cold.
Slings also come in chambray, which is a super soft cotton and linen blend. We particularly love the engineer stripe blue and white sling ($102).
Wildbird is available online, but shipping is $58, so you may need to band together with your mother’s group to make a big order and split the shipping.
