Gone are the days when announcing your pregnancy meant every friend and relative would get out their knitting needles or sewing machine to handmake gifts. A few stalwarts of the crafting tradition are left – a young auntie who makes trendy chevron quilts, a surprisingly modern nan who cross-stitches the most poignant of Taylor Swift lyrics – but for the most part, when we need a baby gift, we head to the shops.
But what’s old is new, and more brands are returning to the tradition of handmaking garments, like Leone & Me, a French brand whose collection is single-handedly crocheted and knitted by the industrious founder, Nathalie Costes.
We never knew baby booties (€34) could come in so many styles. There are little Mary-Janes in powder pink, mint or saffron, all flecked with white, there are periwinkle t-strap sandals, and there are beginner monk-strap style shoes with wooden buttons instead of buckles.
Baby cardigans (€45) fasten with a simple tie at the neckline, a clever design that anyone who has dressed a squirmy baby will appreciate. These cardigans make beautiful layering pieces and come in the same lovely colourful white flecked yarn as the booties.
Just like adults, babies enjoy a good matching ensemble. OK maybe they don’t care, but a put-together outfit and the semblance of order might be the only thing keeping the chaos at bay for us parents. The sweet knitted bloomers (€45) are the perfect way to complete an outfit by Leone & Me.
Leone & Me ships all over the world, and if you’re happy with your purchase, Nathalie appreciates thank yous in the form of posts to social media, and flowers.
